Ex International Web Police Members Speak Out

Tom Duff

To Whom It May Concern:

The following is my recollection of my time with the International Web Police/InterGov International. All the information contained within it is completely true to the best of my knowledge.

I stumbled upon InterGOV’s site back in August of 2002, when I ran a search on International Government agencies. I had found two major organizations, Interpol and InterGOV. With such similar names, I thought that they surely were related to each other. I scanned over the InterGOV site, and came upon the membership application. I immediately decided that I wanted to help in any way that I could. The InterGOV site was fairly well designed, and it was not obvious to me at that time, but I had been stricken with what I now like to call “Hamptonism”, or the false hope of gaining an important status on the Internet that I could show off to people and then push people around, just as Pete Hampton does with his ultimate “President” title. In all seriousness, I knew nothing about Internet law, and I even thought Pete was the “President of the Internet” – boy was I wrong!

I think the thing that most appealed to me when I applied was the fact that minors could join. In fact, I had only reached the tender age of 15 when I joined InterGOV! But, like I said, the Hamptonism effect I had experienced had convinced me to fill in the form right away, because it’s every teen’s dream to have authority, and what better authority is there than that which is over a global information network! I filled in all my information right away, and headed to the InterGOV IRC server via their java chat page. The first person that spoke to me when I joined was a lady who turned out to be one of my best friends in InterGOV, Pam Tomlinson (Badge # 00010). (As a side note, Pam has since left to manage a MEANINGFUL internet site, called the Kid’s Defense Team which aims to stop Internet Pedophiles from Predating on children). Pam welcomed me to InterGOV and sped up my application process. I was placed into the “Explorers Unit” (or EU) within the International Web Police, because I was under the age of 18.

My first few months were fairly uneventful with the training I had to endure, however, there was one eventful time, and I remember it well, because I was in shop class at High School when I received am email from the then adult-advisor of the EU, a Ms. Becky Frazer. I had apparently been rude in a chat room or something to the Vice President of the organization, Linda Carter (Badge #00008), and I was sent an email from Ms. Frazer demanding that I perform certain tasks to make amends for the “situation” I had caused. These tasks included writing an apology email to both her and the vice president, explaining how I had “messed up” and how I “wouldn’t do it again”. Even being 15, I was shocked at the treatment I had to endure from such pompous egos, but then I had remembered that I wanted to “climb the ladder”, so to speak, at IG/IWP, so I sent the letters, and was “forgiven for my acts”. Looking back on the whole fiasco, I see now that I was used as a “stepping stone” for others to make themselves look better. It rather disgusts me, in fact.

To cut short what could easily turn into a LONG account of inappropriate material, I’d like to mention that in the months that followed the above incident, I held a plethora of positions at InterGOV, and up until my “retirement” from IG/IWP in mid-2004, the following list is all of the positions I’ve held. Remember, most of these positions were held when I was 15 or 16 years old!

  • Team Coordinator, IWP Explorers Unit
  • Deputy Director of Personnel Department
  • Director of Civil Division, International Web Police
  • Staff Officer, Training Education, and Development
  • Translations Unit Team Coordinator
  • Special Agent in Charge of Training, IG SpecOps
  • Major General, IG SpecOps Command
  • Tactical Response Team, Reconnaissance Team Leader
  • Senior Advisory Staff council member

Incredible, eh? Well, it’s all true. I’ll be happy to write some more later, but I’m afraid I have to be going now. I hope my story can help others see how InterGOV is, at the VERY least, disrespectful to children and teens. They treat us like we’re second-class netizens, but then feed us hefty titles to keep us in their organization so they can look good. In all honesty, Peter Hampton reminds me of Eric Cartman in an episode of South Park I saw once. Eric was a Tele-evangelist and got all the kids in town to come to his “church”. He preached how bad the world was, and that he could save everyone, and heal everyone, and protect everyone from the evils of the world…if they’d “just put a dollar in the basket”. Anyone who knows Pete knows that he resembles Cartman in that episode perfectly. And honestly, who can blame this guy…it’s making him a good living! So much so, that he doesn’t even have to work outside of being the President of the Internet! He claims to have received no donations, and then sends an email to his public list soliciting for donations! He then even went on to tell me that IG’s got a new sponsor and that they can run for years on the money they’ve received…looks like Pete needed a new computer or a new car…

In closing I’d like to let all the kids currently at IG, or kids thinking of joining, to steer clear of them. I nearly failed my sophomore year at High School because of all the garbage they put me through. With the EBS checks, roll calls, crime reports, and all my other duties, I was more focused on becoming an InterGOV clone than my job as a student in real life. If you’re looking for power, start your own site. Recruit your own volunteers. But if you do, just remember to learn from InterGOV’s mistakes. Don’t fall to Hamptonism.

Best Wishes,
Tom D. Duff
